For better or for worse, the days of hire-to-retire employment are on their way out. Companies are more amicable toward outsourcing needed services to individual contractors these days and, as wages have stagnated and even dropped since the 1980's, the feasibility of making a middle class or better living from a 9 to 5 job have all but evaporated. This situation has a very good side to it, however: For many people, the chance to work for themselves is more likely to be a realistic goal than ever before. Even common office skills have become opportunities for individuals to make money at home.

Working from one's home allows contractors to do away with the expenses of maintaining their own office and to choose the hours they work based on their preferences rather than on anyone else's schedule. Those who have a strong office background, computer repair experience and myriad other skills are now in a position to make money at home, oftentimes allowing them to take home more money than they would have working a traditional job. Even miscellaneous jobs, such as handling mailers for companies and typing are available to independent contractors, as large and small employers alike have cut back on dedicated staff.

The Internet makes most of this possible. When the Internet was adopted as a consumer medium in the late 1990's, one of the potential benefits of the technology was always held to be that it would allow millions to escape the drudgery of commuting, long and tedious days at the office and jobs where filling up those employee's days oftentimes meant "busy work" designed by supervisors to justify that employee's presence. Though it's been a long time coming, the Internet has finally come through as a way to make money at home.

Those with typing and writing skills can just as easily work for their employers from their own homes has they can from an office. Computer technicians and support providers can use the Internet to not only provide user support via VoIP technology and e-mail but can actually manage servers from any location using any one of the dozens of technologies available to do so. Marketing consultants, grant and business plan writers and much more are in steady demand. Administrative assistants are a necessary part of any office setting and "virtual assistants" are very popular today. There is demand for every skill at present.
